Beach fishing 101

Preston Beach is perfect for Beach Fishing 101. Beach fishing is super popular and a great way to teach the young ones how to fish and there are specific fishing spots around Preston Beach. They can cast out 3-5 times and when they lose interest, there are wide, sandy, safe places for them to play. Of course, you will then need to hold the fishing rod, until you get a bite on the line and quickly get them to come back and haul in "their catch". The good news at Preston Beach, the fishing is good, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for a bite. During the day herring and whiting swim past and sun set brings the tailor, mulloway, big stingrays and even sharks.

However, never mistake beach fishing as fun for the adults…. no, no, no. We are just baiting and casting machines, only to give the glory of the final catch to the little ones who have been making sandcastles for the last 15 minutes 🙂 But hey, it beats working and with panoramic ocean views and maybe a sneaky alcoholic bevvie, life isn't that bad!

4WD Driving

Long, Sandy, Quiet beaches = lots of 4WD Driving Fun. As with all things, when 4WD driving you need to respect the local community. Be Safe and make sure you stay within 4WD areas. Remember the sand can be soft so DEFLATE YOUR TYRES! You do not want to end up as a social media meme/viral photo for having your car claimed by the tides. Choose your own adventure as you can drive both north and south on the beach. In fact, you can get onto the beach at Tim's Thicket (when the tide is up) or White Hills, and drive all the way south to Preston, Myalup, Binningup and then exit at Buffalo road.

Facilities

Preston Beach has great facilities for a day out at the beach. There are free electric BBQs and a children's playground for when they have had enough of the water.  Toilet facilities are also available at the Preston Beach Carpark area.

Nature Trails

Yalgorup National Park is located between the Highway and the Beach. Stretching from just south of Mandurah to north of Myalup, it covers an area of 12,888 hectares, including ten magnificent lakes. It protects a wetland system that has achieved international recognition as an important area for migratory waterbirds, and it supports several threatened plant and animal species.

The Lake Clifton Thrombolites are a popular walking trail. Using the boardwalk you can view these living rock- like structures at Lake Clifton, just near Preston Beach. Thrombolites are a limestone colour with a rounded shape. The thrombolite-building micro-organisms are too small for the human eye to see and resemble the earliest forms of life on Earth. The walk trail is 2 km (2 hour) round trip.

There are a number of other bushwalking/nature trails to explore and an abundance of kangaroos and other wildlife to keep an eye out for.

• Bring your golf bag as there is a 9 hole Golf Course which runs right through the town. It is a challenging course with kangaroos galore to delight along the way.
• Preston Beach Spring Festival generally held long weekend in September during the school holidays. Book today so you can enjoy the stalls, local arts and crafts, music, food, bar and more
• No holiday destination can truly thrive without a good General Store and Preston Beach has a great one. Open 7 days per week, Preston Beach General Store has the best fish and chips, burgers and so much more.  It also offers a range of groceries, coffee, freshly baked bread and pastries, bottle shop, ice, bait, fishing tackle, fuel and a postal agency.
• Christmas Festivities – in typical small town fashion, Santa doesn't miss anyone when he comes to town. Visiting all the streets in Preston Beach in a FIRE TRUCK!! The kids love it.

So you love what you have read and want to head down to Preston Beach straight away! How do you get there? It's pretty easy, head south down the Kwinana Freeway, which eventually joins onto Forrest highway. Keep going down past this, and just after it meets the old coast road you can turn off to the right, and drive a few km's into the town.
